Three Major Tamil Nadu Railway Projects Declared as Special Railway Projects

The Ministry of Railways has declared three major railway infrastructure projects involving Tamil Nadu as Special Railway Projects (SRPs), paving the way for faster land acquisition and smoother project implementation.

The three notified projects are:

Arakkonam–Renigunta Third and Fourth Railway Line (77 km)
Gummidipundi–Gudur Third and Fourth Railway Line (90 km)
Hosur–Omalur Railway Line Doubling Project (147 km)

The notification classifies these projects as national infrastructure developed for a public purpose, enabling authorities to acquire land more efficiently and accelerate construction.

Arakkonam–Renigunta Rail Expansion

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 77-km Arakkonam–Renigunta third and fourth railway line has been completed and submitted to the Railway Board for approval.

The project proposes extending the additional railway lines beyond the existing four-line Chennai–Arakkonam corridor. Once completed, it is expected to increase line capacity, improve train operations, and support the growing demand for passenger and freight services.

Gummidipundi–Gudur Third and Fourth Line

The 90-km Gummidipundi–Gudur third and fourth railway line has been planned as an extension of the already sanctioned Athipattu–Gummidipundi third and fourth line project.

While the Chennai–Athipattu section already has four railway tracks, construction on the Athipattu–Gummidipundi stretch is expected to begin shortly. Extending the additional railway lines up to Gudur will significantly improve freight movement, reduce congestion, and enhance operational efficiency along one of Southern Railway`s busiest corridors.

Hosur–Omalur Doubling Project

The 147-km Hosur–Omalur railway line doubling project is another key infrastructure initiative included under the Special Railway Project notification. Doubling the existing railway line will improve train frequency, increase carrying capacity, and strengthen rail connectivity between Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states.

Boost to Rail Infrastructure

The declaration of these projects as Special Railway Projects is expected to speed up land acquisition and facilitate faster execution. Once completed, the projects will enhance passenger and freight transportation, improve railway capacity, reduce congestion, and support Tamil Nadu`s long-term economic and industrial growth.
