Tamil Nadu: GPS Mandatory for Mineral Transport Lorries from November 1, 2026

The Tamil Nadu government has made GPS devices mandatory for all vehicles transporting minerals across the state. From November 1, 2026, lorries without GPS tracking systems will not be allowed to carry mineral resources.

The decision aims to prevent the illegal transportation of minerals to other states and curb unauthorised extraction and movement of mineral resources within Tamil Nadu.

GPS Installation Deadline Ends on October 31

The government had earlier directed owners of vehicles transporting minerals to install GPS devices by September 30. The deadline was subsequently extended until October 31, giving vehicle owners additional time to comply with the requirement.

With the extended deadline ending on October 31, only GPS-equipped vehicles will be permitted to transport minerals from November 1.

Which Vehicles and Materials Are Covered?

Lorries transporting mineral resources must have GPS tracking devices installed. Vehicles without the required equipment will not be permitted to carry materials such as:

- Granite and other stone blocks

- M-Sand

- Sand

- Other mineral resources

Vehicle owners who have not installed GPS devices must complete the process to continue transporting these materials.

Permit Cancellation and Action for Violations

The government has warned that vehicles operating without GPS devices will face action. Their mineral transportation permits may also be cancelled.

Authorities have further stated that complaints about minerals being loaded onto vehicles without GPS tracking systems will be acted upon immediately.

The new requirement is intended to improve monitoring of mineral transportation and prevent illegal movement of resources within and outside Tamil Nadu.
