Vadapalani-Poonamallee Metro Rail Service to Launch Soon

The Tamil Nadu government has announced in the 2026 Budget that the Vadapalani-Poonamallee Metro Rail service will be opened to the public soon.

Construction of Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, covering 118.9 km across three corridors, is progressing at full pace with an estimated investment of ₹63,246 crore.

As part of this phase, the 14.64-km stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction, featuring 11 Metro stations, will be connected to the existing Vadapalani Metro Station. This first section of Phase 2 is expected to be inaugurated shortly for public use.

The Budget also noted that several new Metro Rail proposals recommended by the Tamil Nadu government are currently under active consideration by the Central Government. These include:

- Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam.

- Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Avadi.

- Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram via Sriperumbudur.

The State Government is taking the necessary steps to secure early approval from the Central Government for these proposed projects.

Additionally, the Tamil Nadu government is working jointly with the Central Government and the Government of Karnataka to implement the proposed Hosur-Bommasandra Metro Rail project, which will connect Hosur in Krishnagiri district with Bommasandra in Karnataka.
