Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay travelled together on the newly inaugurated Poonamallee–Vadapalani Metro corridor in Chennai on Sunday after flagging off the metro service. The journey highlighted the expansion of Chennai’s public transport network and the importance of improving connectivity across the western parts of the city.

Modi and Vijay were seen seated together inside the Metro train during the journey. Metro Rail officials briefed them on the new corridor, proposed routes and the progress of the ongoing second-phase expansion.

The Prime Minister also obtained a Metro ticket before proceeding to inaugurate the service.

During the visit, officials explained the infrastructure development planned under Chennai Metro Rail Phase II, including the routes being developed to strengthen urban transportation. The briefing covered the project’s expansion plans and the role of the new corridor in improving travel options for commuters.

The Poonamallee–Vadapalani corridor is expected to improve connectivity between the two locations and benefit passengers travelling across western Chennai. The service is also expected to provide commuters with an additional public transport option as the city continues to expand.

The inauguration marks another step in Chennai’s efforts to develop its Metro Rail network and improve access between key residential and commercial areas.

Vijay Receives PM Modi at Chennai Airport

Earlier, Chief Minister Vijay personally received Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Chennai airport upon his arrival from Delhi.

State ministers, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran and other party functionaries were also present to welcome the Prime Minister.

The airport reception was among the key events surrounding Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu. The visit marks his first trip to the state since the TVK government assumed office.

The meeting between the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister also brought attention to the development programmes planned during the visit, with metro infrastructure and urban connectivity among the important areas of focus.

PM Modi to Participate in Development Programmes at IIT Madras

Apart from inaugurating the new Metro service, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to participate in development-related programmes at IIT Madras.

The programmes form part of his visit to Chennai, which includes a focus on infrastructure development and projects intended to support the city’s growth.

Chennai Metro Expansion to Improve Urban Connectivity

The inauguration of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani Metro corridor comes as Chennai continues to expand its public transportation infrastructure through Metro Rail Phase II.

With officials briefing the Prime Minister and Chief Minister on the project’s progress and future routes, the visit placed renewed focus on the importance of reliable urban transport for the city’s growing population.

The new corridor is expected to benefit commuters travelling between Poonamallee and Vadapalani, while the broader Phase II project aims to extend Metro connectivity across more parts of Chennai.

As the Metro network expands, improved public transport access is expected to play an important role in supporting daily commuting and strengthening connections between residential neighbourhoods, business areas and other key destinations across the city.
