Nilgiri Mountain Railway Services Cancelled Until November 7 Due to Rain-Damaged Tracks

The Salem Division of Southern Railway has extended the suspension of Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) services between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam (Ooty) until November 7, as restoration work continues on tracks damaged by heavy rainfall and landslides.

The services, which have been suspended since October 24, were originally scheduled to resume on Thursday. However, continued rainfall and fresh mudslides along the route have forced railway authorities to extend the cancellation by another three days.

Landslip Damages Nilgiri Mountain Railway Tracks

Heavy rain on the night of October 23 triggered a landslip between Adderly and Coonoor railway stations, causing massive boulders to roll onto the tracks and disrupting train operations.

The affected stretch remains under repair as railway personnel work to clear debris and restore safe rail connectivity.

Restoration Work Underway

Railway teams have been carrying out restoration operations to remove the obstructions and repair the damaged track. As part of the efforts, workers blasted and removed large boulders blocking the railway line.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a popular heritage railway and tourist attraction, connects Mettupalayam with Udhagamandalam through the scenic Nilgiri hills.

Passengers planning to travel on the route are advised to check the latest updates from Southern Railway before making travel arrangements.
