Chennai Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert as Low-Pressure Area May Develop into Cyclonic Storm by October 26

Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience renewed heavy monsoon rainfall over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for heavy rain in Chennai and neighbouring districts. A new low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify in the coming days, raising the possibility of a cyclonic storm by October 26.

The IMD has warned of rainfall measuring 6–12 cm within 24 hours in the city and neighbouring districts over the next four days.

Low-Pressure Area Over Southeast Bay of Bengal

According to the Meteorological Centre, a new low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to persist over the same region and intensify into a depression by Saturday, October 24. There is also a possibility that it could develop into a cyclonic storm by October 26.

The system`s development and movement will be important factors influencing rainfall across Tamil Nadu over the coming days.

Separately, a cyclonic circulation associated with the weather system over the Comorin region and adjoining parts of southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. This circulation helps lift moisture-laden air, which cools and condenses to form rain-bearing clouds.

The evolving weather systems and atmospheric instability are expected to support rainfall across several parts of the state.

Chennai Weather Forecast: Heavy Rain Likely from Friday

Chennai may experience sunshine and cloudy skies at intervals during the day, followed by light rain in some areas on Thursday night. From Friday, October 23, moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning are likely in parts of the city.

An IMD official said the system may move northwards, bringing rain to Chennai and surrounding areas.

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in 26 districts on Friday, including Chennai and Tiruvallur. From October 24 to 26, the warning will also cover Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram, along with several delta and interior districts.

Yellow Alert for Chennai and Neighbouring Districts

The yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall measuring between 6 cm and 12 cm within 24 hours in the areas covered by the warning.

Residents should monitor official weather bulletins, particularly as the low-pressure area is expected to strengthen. Heavy showers, thunderstorms and lightning could affect travel and everyday activities in Chennai and nearby districts.

Chennai Temperature Forecast

Cloudy skies are likely to keep temperatures relatively moderate in Chennai. According to the IMD, the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 31°C and 32°C, while the minimum temperature may range from 25°C to 26°C.

WhWhat to Expect Over the Next Four Days

With the low-pressure area potentially intensifying into a depression and possibly a cyclonic storm by October 26, weather conditions across Tamil Nadu warrant close monitoring. The system`s eventual movement and intensity will influence the distribution and strength of rainfall.

Residents are advised to follow official IMD updates for the latest rainfall warnings and district-wise forecasts.

Note: The possibility of a cyclonic storm by October 26 is a forecast, not confirmation that a cyclone has formed.
