The Tamil Nadu government has announced an increase in the monthly honorarium for teachers working in colleges under the Department of Art and Culture from ₹20,000 to ₹25,000.

The announcement was made by Minister Rajmohan in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly while responding to discussions related to art, culture, archaeology and museums.

The government also announced several measures to support traditional artists and preserve Tamil Nadu’s cultural heritage. Research centres for traditional art forms such as Karagattam, Kummi, Oyilattam, Kolattam, Therukoothu, Parai and Silambattam will be established in Coimbatore and Thanjavur at an estimated cost of ₹2 crore.

Annual financial assistance for folk artists to purchase musical instruments, costumes and ornaments will be increased from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000.

The monthly assistance of ₹3,000 provided to economically weaker artists aged 58 and above will also be extended to an additional 1,500 artists.

The government has further allocated ₹49 crore over five years to restore and protect 76 heritage monuments and archaeological sites under the Tamil Heritage Conservation Works scheme.
