How to Stop Snoring Naturally: 4 Simple Tongue and Mouth Exercises

Snoring during sleep can disturb both the person who snores and their partner. Certain tongue and mouth exercises may help reduce snoring by improving the strength and function of muscles around the tongue and throat. However, these exercises may not work for everyone, and results can vary depending on the underlying cause.

4 Simple Mouth Exercises That May Help Reduce Snoring

1. Tongue Extension

- Stick your tongue out as far as comfortably possible.

- Hold it in that position for about five seconds.

- Relax and repeat three to four times.

This exercise works the tongue muscles. Avoid using a spoon or another object to apply extra pressure if it causes discomfort.

2. Side-to-Side Tongue Push

- Move your tongue towards the left and right sides of your mouth.

- Place your palm gently against one cheek.

- Press your tongue towards the inside of that cheek while your hand provides light resistance.

- Repeat three to four times on each side.

This exercise focuses on the muscles that help move the tongue.

3. Tongue Press and Swallow

- Place the tip of your tongue against the area just behind your upper front teeth.

- Press your tongue gently against the roof of your mouth.

- Swallow your saliva while maintaining the tongue position, as comfortably as possible.

- Repeat three to four times.

Stop if you experience discomfort or difficulty swallowing.

4. Tongue Lift

- Sit or stand comfortably in front of a mirror.

- Press your tongue gently against the roof of your mouth.

- Hold the position briefly, then relax.

- Repeat three to four times.

The aim is to engage the tongue and surrounding muscles. Do not strain your tongue or throat while performing this exercise.

Can Mouth Exercises Reduce Snoring?

Exercises that train the tongue and upper-airway muscles, sometimes called oropharyngeal exercises, may help reduce snoring in some people when practised consistently. However, five minutes of exercise a day is not guaranteed to stop snoring, and these exercises should not be considered a cure for every snoring problem.

Other measures that may help include sleeping on your side, maintaining a healthy weight where appropriate, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime and following a regular sleep schedule.

When Should You Seek Medical Advice?

Frequent or loud snoring can sometimes be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.

Consult a healthcare professional if snoring is accompanied by:

- Pauses in breathing during sleep.

- Gasping or choking sounds at night.

- Excessive daytime sleepiness.

- Morning headaches or difficulty concentrating.

A medical assessment can help identify the cause and determine whether further treatment is needed.
