Heavy Rain Accompanied by Thunderstorms Lashes Chennai; Several Areas Receive Downpour

Several parts of Chennai witnessed heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms on Sunday evening after the city experienced a sudden spell of overcast skies. The rainfall brought much-needed respite from the humid weather while affecting traffic movement in several areas.

Heavy showers were reported from Saidapet, Guindy, Velachery, Padur, and Navalur, among other localities. Roads in these areas were left wet, prompting motorists to switch on their headlights and drive cautiously due to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions.

The rainfall also slowed traffic during the evening hours, with commuters advised to exercise caution while travelling. Authorities have urged motorists to maintain safe distances and avoid waterlogged stretches wherever possible.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall over Chennai and its suburban regions. The weather forecast has materialized, with rain continuing in several parts of the city.
