Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast for August 3: Heavy Rain Likely in Western Ghats; Moderate Showers Expected in Chennai

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu over the next two days. Heavy rain is expected over parts of the Western Ghats, while Chennai is likely to receive moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning during the evening and night on August 3.

Weather System Influencing Tamil Nadu

According to the RMC, the current weather conditions are being influenced by a trough extending from north interior Karnataka to the Comorin region, passing across south interior Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu at an altitude of 5.8 km above mean sea level. Additionally, an offshore trough extending from south Gujarat to north Kerala is contributing to the ongoing rainfall activity across the state.

Chennai Weather Today

For Chennai, the weather office has forecast a partly cloudy sky, with moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning expected during the evening and night hours on Monday, August 3.

Residents are advised to remain cautious while commuting, as sudden showers may lead to waterlogging and traffic congestion in some areas.

Heavy Rain Alert for Tamil Nadu Districts

The RMC has issued a heavy rain forecast for isolated places in the following districts:

- Ghat areas of Coimbatore

- The Nilgiris

- Theni

- Tiruvannamalai

- Villupuram

- Cuddalore

- Puducherry

The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph across several parts of Tamil Nadu.

Moderate Rain Expected in Other Regions

Moderate rainfall is likely at a few places across:

- Remaining Western Ghats districts

- North coastal districts

- Cauvery Delta region

- Karaikal

The rest of Tamil Nadu is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall.

Rainfall to Continue Through August 8

The RMC has indicated that rainfall activity will continue throughout the week, although the intensity is expected to reduce gradually.

From August 4 to August 8, moderate rain is likely at isolated plalaces over the Western Ghats, north coastal districts, Puducherry, and Karaikal, while light rainfall is expected across the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu.

Highest Rainfall Recorded

Several parts of Tamil Nadu received significant rainfall on Sunday.

Upper Bhavani in the Nilgiris recorded the highest rainfall of 213 mm, followed by:

Chinnakalar – 160 mm

Sholayar – 120 mm

Valparai – 100 mm

Several locations in Ranipet, Coimbatore, and the Nilgiris also experienced substantial rainfall.

Temperature Expected to Fall

Maximum temperatures, which remained 2°C to 4°C above normal in many parts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, are likely to drop by 2°C to 3°C over parts of south Tamil Nadu during the next two days, providing relief from the recent warm conditions.
