National Sports Day 2026: India Celebrates the Spirit of Sports and Fitness

NEW DELHI: India observes National Sports Day on August 29, 2026, commemorating the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.

The day honours Dhyan Chand’s remarkable contribution to Indian hockey and promotes the importance of sports, fitness, discipline, teamwork and healthy living.

Remembering Major Dhyan Chand

Major Dhyan Chand represented India at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games, winning gold medals with the Indian hockey team on all three occasions. His exceptional ball control and goal-scoring skills earned him the titles “Hockey Wizard” and “The Magician.”

Why National Sports Day Matters

National Sports Day encourages people, especially children and youngsters, to take part in sports and make physical activity a regular part of life. Across India, the day is marked through sporting events, fitness programmes and activities involving games such as hockey, kabaddi, basketball and athletics.

The occasion also recognises the efforts of athletes, coaches and sports professionals who contribute to the growth of Indian sports.

National Sports Day serves as a reminder that sports can build fitness, confidence, discipline and teamwork while inspiring the next generation of athletes.
