Women Can Now Travel Free on Express, LSS and Deluxe Buses

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an expansion of the free bus travel scheme for women, allowing them to travel free of cost on Express, LSS and Deluxe government buses as well.

The expanded scheme, named ‘Vetrip Payanam’ (Journey of Success), will come into effect from October 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

Under the first phase of the scheme, women will be able to avail themselves of free travel on Express, LSS and Deluxe government buses operating in metropolitan and urban areas.

To facilitate inter-district travel, the scheme will also cover ordinary-fare government buses operating on mofussil and hilly routes. This will enable women to travel between districts without paying bus fares.

The government has clarified that there will be no income-based eligibility restrictions or limits on the number of trips a woman can undertake under the scheme.

Transgender persons will also be eligible to avail themselves of free travel under the expanded scheme.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Vijay in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly under Rule 110.
