Tamil Medium Students Get 20% Priority in Government Jobs as Governor Approves Bill

The Tamil Nadu Governor, R.N. Ravi, has given his assent to the amendment bill providing 20% priority for students who have studied entirely in Tamil medium in direct government job recruitments.

The amendment bill, passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly last year, applies only to new direct appointments made to Tamil Nadu government posts.

Under the amended law, candidates who have studied completely in Tamil medium from Class 1 up to the educational qualification prescribed for the government post will be eligible for the priority.

Candidates who studied in another language as their medium of instruction but wrote their examinations in Tamil will not be eligible for this priority.

Students who joined school directly between Classes 2 and 8 under the Right to Education Act and continued their education in Tamil medium will also be eligible. Similarly, students who studied in Tamil medium in another state and continued their education in Tamil medium after joining a school in Tamil Nadu will qualify.

However, students who did not attend school and passed examinations directly as private candidates in Tamil medium will not be eligible for the priority.

Students who attended school, appeared for Class 10, 11 or 12 public examinations, failed one or more subjects, and later passed those subjects as private candidates will remain eligible, provided they subsequently completed their school and college education in Tamil medium.

Eligible candidates must obtain certificates from all educational institutions they attended, confirming that they studied in Tamil medium up to the educational qualification prescribed for the respective government post.
