Tamil Nadu Cancels Saturday Working Days for 100 Sub-Registrar Offices from November 1

The Tamil Nadu Government has announced the cancellation of mandatory Saturday working days at 100 Sub-Registrar Offices across the state, effective November 1, 2026. The decision was issued through a government order by the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department.

Saturday Registration Services to Stop

Since 2022, 100 selected Sub-Registrar Offices in Tamil Nadu have been functioning on Saturdays to help people who find it difficult to complete property registration and other documentation during regular working days.

However, the government has now cancelled the earlier order that permitted these offices to operate on Saturdays. From November 1, the 100 Sub-Registrar Offices will follow the regular Monday-to-Friday working schedule.

Why Has the Government Taken This Decision?

According to the Registration Department, Sub-Registrars are responsible for document registration as well as several additional administrative duties. Operating offices on Saturdays has reportedly affected the completion of other official work.

The Inspector General of Registration recommended discontinuing mandatory Saturday operations to improve administrative efficiency without affecting the quality of public services. The government reviewed and accepted the recommendation.

Focus on Digital Registration Services

The decision also comes amid the Registration Department`s efforts to modernise its services through initiatives such as “Registration from Anywhere.” The department is planning to expand paperless and non-visit registration facilities in the future.

The announcement follows a commitment made by the Registration Minister during the 2026–27 Commercial Taxes and Registration Department policy discussion in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Key Update: From November 1, 2026, the 100 affected Sub-Registrar Offices will operate from Monday to Friday, with mandatory Saturday working discontinued.
