Chennai: GCC to Take Over Anna Salai Footpath and Stormwater Drain Maintenance

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is in discussions with the Tamil Nadu State Highways Department to take over the maintenance of footpaths and stormwater drains (SWDs) along major arterial roads in Chennai. The proposed move aims to improve pedestrian safety, remove encroachments and ensure better maintenance of public infrastructure.

Anna Salai Footpath Maintenance Under Pilot Project

As part of the first phase, a 12-km stretch of Anna Salai, along with selected sections of Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road towards Chennai Airport, is proposed to be handed over to the GCC. The Teynampet–Saidapet flyover section will be excluded from the pilot project.

Under the proposed arrangement, the State Highways Department will focus on maintaining the main carriageways, while the GCC will handle footpath maintenance, stormwater drain clearance and other infrastructure beyond the road curb.

Poonamallee High Road and Other Roads May Follow

If the pilot project is successful, the maintenance arrangement may be extended to other major Chennai roads, including Poonamallee High Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Salai.

Officials from the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority said discussions are under way to identify and finalise the road stretches. The State Highways Department is expected to issue a no-objection certificate (NOC) after the process is completed.

GCC Plans to Improve Pedestrian Infrastructure

During discussions, GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran reportedly highlighted the corporation`s existing efforts to clear footpaths and carry out enforcement activities within its jurisdiction.

Taking responsibility for footpath maintenance and stormwater drain clearance could help the corporation coordinate these activities more effectively and improve walking conditions for Chennai residents.

Residents Raise Concerns Over Anna Salai Footpaths

Residents have highlighted several problems affecting pedestrian movement along Anna Salai. Mohamood Akil, a resident of Royapettah, pointed out encroachments near the GP Road–Anna Salai intersection and other locations where footpaths are blocked.

Missing footpath sections and loose or uneven paving blocks are also among the concerns requiring attention. Regular repairs and the removal of obstructions will be essential to provide safe and accessible pedestrian pathways.

Improved Walking Facilities Expected in Chennai

The proposed transfer of maintenance responsibilities could help improve footpath conditions and stormwater drain management along Chennai`s major arterial roads. The success of the pilot project will be important in determining whether similar arrangements are extended to other highways within the city.
