Chennai Egmore Railway Station: Platforms 1 to 5 Closed for Foot Overbridge Work

Construction work on a new foot overbridge (FOB) at Chennai Egmore Railway Station has intensified as part of the station`s ongoing redevelopment project. Due to the work, Platforms 1 to 5 have been closed, and some express train services have been shifted to Tambaram.

The Chennai Egmore Railway Station redevelopment project, being carried out at an estimated cost of ₹734.91 crore, includes the construction of a major new foot overbridge. The initial phase of work began in February as part of the redevelopment programme.

Platforms 1 to 5 Closed

The second phase of construction is currently under way, involving the installation of a steel foot overbridge. To facilitate the work, the tracks serving Platforms 1 to 5 at Egmore Railway Station have been temporarily closed.

According to Southern Railway officials, the new foot overbridge will be approximately 18 metres wide and 120 metres long and will connect the platforms.

A large pit has been excavated on Platform 4 for the construction of supporting pillars. As a result, the railway tracks serving Platforms 1 to 5 have been completely closed for the ongoing construction work.

Express Trains Shifted to Platforms 6 to 9

Due to the closure, express trains are being operated from Platforms 6 to 9 at Chennai Egmore Railway Station.

Meanwhile, suburban electric train services will continue to operate as usual from Platforms 10 and 11.

Passengers travelling through Egmore are advised to check the latest train platform information before arriving at the station, as platform arrangements may change depending on the progress of the construction work.

Next Phase of Foot Overbridge Work

After the current work is completed, the next phase will involve installing the pillars and supporting structures of the foot overbridge across Platforms 6 to 8.

Southern Railway officials said further changes to train services may be made depending on the construction schedule.

Electric Train Service Changes

Some Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu suburban electric train services are scheduled to be fully or partially cancelled from August 22 to August 30 due to the ongoing construction work.

Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and check the latest Southern Railway service updates before travelling.
