Egg Prices Soar to Record ₹6.65 in Namakkal

Egg prices have reached an all-time high in Namakkal, India`s leading poultry hub, with the farm gate price touching a record ₹6.65 per egg.

Previously, the wholesale price had peaked at ₹6.40 per egg on December 23 last year. Prices declined afterward but began rising steadily from the beginning of June this year.

The farm gate price stood at ₹5.70 per egg on June 1 and increased by five to ten paise at regular intervals. It climbed to ₹6.45 on June 17, ₹6.50 on June 26, ₹6.55 on July 10, ₹6.60 on Saturday, and reached a record ₹6.65 on Sunday.

The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) determines the wholesale procurement price based on production levels and market demand. With the wholesale price now at ₹6.65 per egg, retail prices have risen to as much as ₹8 per egg in local shops.

Poultry farmers attributed the price hike to reduced egg production caused by soaring temperatures and increased demand following the reopening of schools. They expect procurement prices to rise further if the current gap between supply and demand continues.

Namakkal, India`s largest egg-producing region, is home to around 1,100 poultry farms with more than seven crore birds. The district produces approximately six crore eggs every day, supplying large quantities to the state`s noon meal scheme while also meeting demand from other Indian states and export markets.
