Nilgiris Launches Smart Tourist QR Code to Reduce Ooty Summer Traffic Congestion
To manage heavy summer traffic in the Nilgiris district, the district administration has launched a modern web-based tourism guide called the “Smart Tourist QR Code.”
The initiative was introduced by NS Nisha and developed by the Nilgiris District Police to help tourists access real-time travel information during the peak summer season.
Every year, large numbers of tourists visit Ooty and nearby hill stations during April and May, leading to severe traffic congestion as many visitors arrive in private vehicles or hired cabs.
Using the Smart Tourist QR Code, tourists can now check live traffic updates in Ooty before entering the town. The system also helps visitors locate available parking spaces at major tourist destinations, allowing them to avoid unnecessary delays and traffic jams.
In addition, the QR code platform provides weather alerts, road obstruction updates, and other important travel notifications across the Nilgiris district, helping tourists plan their trips more efficiently.
Meanwhile, Lakshmi Bhavya Taneeru announced restrictions on bringing horses into the Nilgiris from other districts due to the spread of Equine Herpesvirus. Authorities stated that horses cannot be brought into the district without proper authorisation.
The collector also warned that strict action would be taken against owners whose horses are found roaming unattended on roads. Further, the Municipal Administration and Animal Husbandry Department will begin implanting microchips in horses for monitoring and regulation purposes.
