Chennai Corporation Vaccinates 1.68 Lakh Street Dogs Against Rabies; 71,388 Pets Microchipped

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has intensified its animal welfare and public health initiatives, successfully administering anti-rabies vaccinations to 1.68 lakh street dogs across the city.

According to official data, the civic body has also issued licenses and implanted microchips in 71,388 pet animals, helping improve pet registration, identification, and monitoring across Chennai.

As part of its efforts to control the stray dog population, the Corporation is currently performing sterilization surgeries on around 200 street dogs every day. The programme aims to ensure humane population control while reducing the risk of rabies transmission.

Officials further stated that work is progressing rapidly to establish four additional animal birth control and sterilization centres in Chennai. Once operational, these centres are expected to significantly enhance the city`s capacity to manage and care for stray animals.

The initiatives form part of the Chennai Corporation`s broader strategy to improve public health, promote responsible pet ownership, and strengthen animal welfare measures across the city.
