Tambaram Bus Terminus Crowded as 41 Suburban Train Services Are Cancelled for Maintenance

Thousands of commuters experienced travel disruptions on Sunday after Southern Railway cancelled 41 suburban train services between Tambaram and Chennai Beach to facilitate scheduled maintenance work. The cancellations, in effect from 10.45 a.m. to 3.15 p.m., led to a sharp increase in passenger traffic at the Tambaram bus terminus, as many travellers relied on Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses to continue their journey.

To minimise inconvenience, Southern Railway operated special train services between Thirumalpur, Chengalpattu, and Tambaram at hourly intervals. However, passengers travelling towards Chennai Beach, T. Nagar, Vadapalani, Koyambedu, Saidapet, Guindy, and Chennai Airport had to transfer to MTC buses at Tambaram, resulting in long queues and overcrowding at the bus terminus.

Despite the operation of additional MTC special buses, the heavy passenger rush continued throughout the afternoon. The increased number of buses on the GST Road also caused significant traffic congestion around the Tambaram railway station and nearby junctions, affecting both public and private transport.

Commuters had earlier requested additional transport services, as July 12 was considered an auspicious day and was expected to witness higher-than-normal travel demand. A similar situation occurred on the previous Sunday when 41 suburban train services were cancelled for maintenance, leaving many passengers stranded and forcing some to travel in overcrowded and uncomfortable conditions.

The recurring congestion highlights the need for better coordination between Southern Railway and the MTC during planned maintenance works. Improved passenger information, increased bus frequency, and enhanced transport arrangements would help minimise inconvenience for the thousands of commuters who depend on Chennai`s suburban rail network every day.
