Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Chennai’s scientists, researchers and young innovators for working on technologies that could shape the future of society. Speaking during his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, he highlighted several research initiatives and startup innovations he encountered during his visit to Chennai earlier in October 2026.

IIT Madras Brain Research Centre Focuses on Neurological Diseases

During his Chennai visit, Modi dedicated the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras to the nation. The centre has developed a brain-mapping technology platform that could contribute to research into the complexities of the human brain.

The Prime Minister noted that the brain remains a major area of scientific investigation. He expressed hope that research conducted in Chennai could contribute to better solutions for neurological conditions associated with ageing, including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, for which treatment options remain limited.

Chennai Startups Develop Innovative Technologies

Modi also spoke about his interaction with young startup entrepreneurs during a Chennai Metro journey. He highlighted their work across several technology sectors.

- Gold purity testing: A startup is researching technology to accurately assess the quality and purity of gold.

- Digital fraud recovery: Another startup is developing technological solutions to help recover money lost through digital fraud more quickly.

- Early cancer detection: Researchers are exploring the use of artificial intelligence to detect ovarian cancer at an early stage.

- Long-distance drones: Chennai-based startups are working on drones capable of flying long distances over the sea.

- Advanced electric vehicle batteries: Research is underway to develop advanced battery technologies for electric vehicles.

- AI for defence: Startups are exploring artificial intelligence applications in defence technology.

Chennai Emerging as a Research and Innovation Hub

The Prime Minister’s remarks highlighted the range of research and development activities taking place in Chennai, from brain science and healthcare to artificial intelligence, electric mobility and defence technology.

He praised the efforts of young researchers and entrepreneurs working to develop practical solutions to complex challenges. These initiatives reflect the growing role of scientific research and startup innovation in addressing future technological and societal needs.
