Chennai Marina Beach to Get New Accessible Pathway for Wheelchair Users at Rs 2.17 Crore

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to construct a new, durable and accessible pathway for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and wheelchair users opposite Vivekananda House at Marina Beach in Chennai. The project is estimated to cost Rs 2.17 crore.

The proposed pathway aims to improve accessibility and provide a safer, more comfortable experience for visitors with mobility challenges.

New Accessible Walkway at Marina Beach

The existing 263-metre-long and 3-metre-wide wooden ramp was constructed at a cost of Rs 1.14 crore and inaugurated in November 2022. The facility used different hardwood varieties, including Brazilian timber.

However, complaints about damage to the wooden ramp raised concerns over safety and accessibility for persons with disabilities and wheelchair users. In response, the GCC plans to develop a stronger pathway with a solid base to improve durability.

Features of the New Marina Beach Pathway

According to the project tender, the work will include the construction, supply, installation, finishing and commissioning of a timber-decked accessible pathway. Approved high-density timber varieties, including Red Meranti and Babool wood, are proposed for the project.

The planned facilities include:

- Handrails for improved safety and support

- Designated crossing spaces for pedestrians

- Reflectors and retro-reflective markings

- Cautionary and informative signboards

- Reflective road studs

- Proper sectioning, filling and levelling

- Seating arrangements at the end of the wooden walkway

The project also includes the necessary hardware and related works required to make the pathway fully functional.

Better Accessibility for Visitors at Marina Beach

The new pathway is expected to improve access to Marina Beach for wheelchair users, senior citizens and visitors with mobility difficulties. The proposed crossing spaces, reflective features and seating arrangements are intended to make the walkway more convenient and safer to use.

Once completed, the facility could strengthen Chennai`s efforts to make public spaces more inclusive and accessible to everyone.
