Nungambakkam Street to Be Named After K Bhagyaraj: Corporation Gives Approval

A street in Nungambakkam where veteran filmmaker and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj lived is set to be renamed in his memory.

The Lake Area 5th Cross Street in Nungambakkam has been proposed to be renamed “Thiraikathai Mannan Director K Bhagyaraj Street.” The proposal is aimed at recognising Bhagyaraj`s contribution to Tamil cinema and his place in the cultural history of Tamil Nadu.

Proposal to Rename Street After K Bhagyaraj

The proposal to rename the street was made by Poornima Bhagyaraj, wife of K Bhagyaraj. The family continues to reside in the area.

Earlier, School Education, Tamil Development and Information Minister A Rajmohan had requested the Chennai Corporation to take necessary steps to rename the street in honour of the filmmaker.

The request cited Bhagyaraj`s contribution to Tamil cinema and his significant place in the cultural history of the state.

Corporation Council Gives Approval

The Chennai Corporation Council has given its post-facto approval for the proposed renaming of the street.

The proposal will now require the final approval of the Tamil Nadu State Government before the new name can officially come into effect.

Recognition for K Bhagyaraj

K Bhagyaraj is known for his work as a filmmaker, screenwriter and actor in Tamil cinema. Renaming the street where he lived would serve as a local recognition of his contribution to the film industry.

The final decision is expected after the State Government considers the Corporation`s proposal.
