Madurantakam, Dharapuram Bypoll Results Tomorrow: Who Will Win?

The vote counting for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections will be held tomorrow, October 9. The Election Commission has scheduled counting from 8 AM, with postal ballots to be counted first.

Bypolls Seen as a Test for the TVK Government

By-elections were held on October 6 in Madurantakam (SC) constituency in Chengalpattu district and Dharapuram (SC) constituency in Tiruppur district. The two seats fell vacant after AIADMK legislators K. Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama resigned and subsequently joined the TVK.

The bypolls have attracted considerable political attention as they are the first direct electoral contests for the TVK government after it assumed office. The results will provide the outcome of these two constituencies, but they should not by themselves be treated as a prediction of the government`s wider electoral standing.

Why Is the Bypoll Result Important?

The Madurantakam and Dharapuram contests have been closely watched by the ruling TVK and opposition parties. The constituencies were previously represented by AIADMK legislators who later joined the TVK and are now contesting the bypolls as TVK candidates. The results will therefore be significant for the candidates and parties contesting these two seats, while the final result will be known only after the counting process is completed.

Leaders Conducted Intensive Campaigns

The by-elections witnessed campaigning by major political parties, including the TVK, DMK and AIADMK. The contests have drawn attention across Tamil Nadu because of the political significance attached to the two vacant Assembly seats.

Polling began at 7 AM on October 6 and continued until 6 PM. The voting process was largely peaceful, with minor technical issues reported at some polling stations and resolved by election officials.

Contestants in Both Constituencies

In Madurantakam, the key candidates include K. Maragatham Kumaravel (TVK), I. Paranthamen (DMK), S. Kanitha Sampath (AIADMK), P. Suganthi (CPI(M)) and G. Janakiraman (Naam Tamilar Katchi). A total of 27 candidates were in the fray.

In Dharapuram, the key candidates include P. Sathyabama (TVK), S. Suganya (DMK), K. Banumathi (AIADMK), P. Lakshmanan (CPI) and M. Karthika (Naam Tamilar Katchi). A total of 22 candidates contested the seat.

Voter Turnout Declined

The final turnout was lower than the April Assembly election in both constituencies. Madurantakam recorded around 86.26% polling, compared with 93.22% in April, while Dharapuram recorded around 80.30%, compared with 89.89% previously.

The decline in turnout has added another point of interest ahead of the counting process. However, turnout figures alone do not esestablish which candidate will win.

Vote Counting Begins at 8 AM Tomorrow

Vote counting in both constituencies will begin at 8 AM on October 9. Postal ballots will be counted first, followed by the counting of votes recorded through electronic voting machines. The sealed EVMs have been kept in designated strong rooms under security until counting day.

As counting progresses, round-wise trends will indicate the relative position of the candidates. However, the winner in Madurantakam and Dharapuram will be known only after the official counting and declaration of results.
