Chennai GCC Collects Record ₹1,436.75 Crore in Property and Professional Taxes

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has achieved its highest-ever tax revenue collection for the first half of a financial year, collecting ₹1,436.75 crore in property tax and professional tax during the first six months of FY 2026–27.

The total collection includes ₹1,124.69 crore in property tax and ₹312.06 crore in professional tax. The achievement reflects an increase in tax revenue compared with the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

Property Tax Collection Increases by 12.95%

According to a senior GCC official, the corporation had set a target of collecting ₹1,200 crore in property tax during the first half of the financial year.

Property tax collection increased by 12.95% compared with the first half of FY 2025–26, while professional tax collection recorded growth of 6.89%.

The corporation reported that around 9.20 lakh property tax assessees had paid their taxes in full. Additionally, approximately 45,000 professional tax assessees had cleared their dues in full.

GCC Collects Over ₹96 Crore on September 30

The Greater Chennai Corporation recorded a substantial collection on September 30, collecting ₹50.26 crore in property tax and ₹45.94 crore in professional tax on a single day.

Officials attributed the achievement to regular monitoring, periodic reviews, micro-level tax collection planning and an intensive tax collection drive conducted in July.

Chennai Has Over 4.15 Lakh Registered Property Taxpayers

According to the civic body, Chennai has approximately 4.15 lakh registered property taxpayers and more than 1.2 lakh professional taxpayers within the corporation limits.

The GCC has continued its efforts to improve tax collection through monitoring and targeted collection activities.

Tax Revenue Rises Compared with Previous Year

During the first half of FY 2025–26, the corporation collected ₹1,283 crore in property and professional taxes. This included ₹992 crore in property tax and ₹291 crore in professional tax.

The total collection has now increased to ₹1,436.75 crore in the corresponding period of FY 2026–27, highlighting growth in both major tax categories.

The record collection is expected to support the corporation`s civic administration and public infrastructure responsibilities across Chennai.
