Chennai Corporation Makes Waste Segregation Mandatory from September 1

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced that bulk waste generators, including apartment complexes, hotels and other establishments, must segregate waste at source from September 1. Those who fail to follow the waste segregation rules will face penalties, Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran has warned.

The announcement was made during a review meeting on solid waste management in Chennai, chaired by the Corporation Commissioner at Ripon Buildings.

Four Types of Waste to Be Segregated

According to the Chennai Corporation, bulk waste generators must separate waste at the point of generation into wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and hazardous waste.

Officials have been instructed to continue awareness campaigns among residents and establishments to encourage proper waste segregation. Action, including fines, will be taken against those who fail to follow the rules.

Door-to-door awareness campaigns have already started in the southern zones of Chennai. Similar campaigns will subsequently be conducted across the northern and central zones.

94 Acres Reclaimed at Perungudi Dump Yard

The Chennai Corporation is also undertaking major efforts to clear legacy waste from city dump yards.

At the Perungudi dump yard, the first phase of biomining has been completed, resulting in the recovery of 94 acres of land. Under the second phase, the Corporation is working to remove around 5.5 lakh tonnes of waste, of which approximately 28,000 tonnes has already been cleared.

Officials have been directed to speed up the remaining work.

44 Lakh Tonnes of Waste Removed at Kodungaiyur

At the Kodungaiyur dump yard, biomining work is being carried out to remove around 66 lakh tonnes of waste. So far, approximately 44 lakh tonnes of waste has been cleared, helping reclaim around 16 acres of land.

The Commissioner has instructed officials to closely monitor the project and complete the remaining work quickly.

Biomining Work at Athipattu

At the Athipattu dump yard, around 1 lakh cubic metres of waste was removed during the first phase of biomining.

The second phase involves removing 72,000 tonnes of waste, of which around 36,000 tonnes has already been cleared. Officials have been directed to accelerate the work.

The Chennai Corporation`s latest measures are aimed at improving waste segregation, solid waste management and the scientific disposal of legacy waste across the city.
