In the past, if it was dengue cases that created problems for the people, now it is Chikungunya fever that is making the lives difficult for many.

In 2023, the state of Tamil Nadu recorded 222 Chikungunya fever cases but it has doubled in 2024. Until October, TN recorded as many as 512 cases. This has caught the attention of many now.

What is Chikungunya?
It is a fever that is caused by aedes mosquitoes that is also responsible for dengue virus transmission also. It is now said that the increase in the breeding grounds has been the reason for the rise in the number of dengue and chikungunya cases in Tamil Nadu.

In 2024 until the month of October, Tamil Nadu has witnessed more than 2251 suspected cases of Chikungunya.

Truth is that the number of Chikungunya cases in 2019 was 691 and it decreased during the pandemic. Just 153 cases of chikungunya was reported in 2020. In 2022 and in 2023, 181 cases and 222 cases of Chikungunya respectively were witnessed.

There might be a slight increase in the Chikungunya cases due to the recent rains in TN. Point is that there has been no outbreak of Chikungunya reported across TN.

According to a senior official from the TN health department it was confirmed that in the last 5years the number of Chikungunya cases have increased in 2024 only across TN.

He spoke about how several fever cases are being reported across the state and how Chikungunya was not as common as dengue fever. He added that Chikungunya must be treated properly and it should not be ignored or neglected at any cost.

Information gathered is that in an integral way the prevention and control measure has been carried out against Chikungunya along with the dengue control.
