Tamil Nadu May Replace Trimester System with Single Textbooks for Classes 6 and 7 from 2027-28

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department is reportedly considering replacing the trimester textbook system for Classes 6 and 7 with a single textbook for each subject from the 2027-28 academic year.

If implemented, students in these classes will receive one textbook per subject for the entire academic year instead of separate textbooks for each term.

According to sources in the School Education Department, the proposal is still under discussion and has not yet been formally shared with teachers, school staff, or other stakeholders. However, officials indicated that the move is being actively considered as part of ongoing curriculum reforms.

This would not be the first such change. Around three academic years ago, the department introduced a single textbook system for Class 8, replacing the trimester model. Department sources noted that the earlier decision was also implemented without extensive consultation.

Currently, Classes 1 to 5 under the Tamil Nadu State Board continue to follow the three-term textbook system, while Classes 9 to 12 use a single textbook for the entire academic year.

Meanwhile, the School Education Department has begun preparations to print textbooks for Classes 1 to 3. Officials said the printing process will commence shortly to ensure the books are ready before the next academic term begins after the holidays.

The department explained that the printing schedule was delayed due to recent syllabus revisions for elementary classes. However, the approval process is now in its final stage, and officials are working to complete printing on time.

If approved, the proposed change for Classes 6 and 7 is expected to simplify curriculum planning, reduce the number of textbooks students carry, and bring greater consistency to the Tamil Nadu State Board education system.
