Southern Railway Chennai Division Expands Solar Power Capacity Across Railway Stations

Southern Railway has strengthened its renewable energy initiatives by adding 140 kwp solar power capacity across key railway stations and facilities in Chennai Division during 2025-26.

The newly installed solar power systems have been set up at St Thomas Mount station, Guindy railway station and railway training facilities in Avadi. The expansion is expected to generate nearly 2.04 lakh units of electricity annually, resulting in estimated savings of around Rs 19.21 lakh every year.

Chennai Division Solar Power Capacity Reaches 2,494.5 kwp

With the latest additions, the total installed solar power capacity of Chennai Division has increased to 2,494.5 kwp. The division generated 23.15 lakh units of solar energy during 2025-26, helping save nearly Rs 1.43 crore in electricity costs.

The solar installations are spread across multiple railway stations, office buildings, sheds, platform shelters and training centres.

Railway Stations Using Solar Energy in Chennai Division

Solar power systems have been installed at several important railway

locations, including:

- Chennai Central New Concourse Hall
- Moore Market Complex
- Tambaram
- Chengalpattu
- Kancheepuram
- Katpadi
- Arakkonam
- Royapuram
- Jolarpettai
- Tiruvallur

The division is also using hybrid renewable energy systems that combine windmills and solar power units to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.

Southern Railway Renewable Energy Target for 2026-27

Southern Railway has announced plans to further expand green energy infrastructure by adding another 2,600 kwp solar power capacity during 2026-27.

The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ larger push towards clean energy adoption, reduced electricity costs and environmentally sustainable railway operations.
