Tamil Nadu Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme 2026: Eligibility, Benefits and How to Apply

The Tamil Nadu Government has introduced an additional subsidy for households installing rooftop solar panels under the Tamil Nadu Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme, in partnership with the Central Government`s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Eligible residential consumers can receive a combined subsidy of up to ₹1 lakh for installing a 3 kW rooftop solar system. This includes up to ₹78,000 from the Central Government and an additional ₹22,000 from the Tamil Nadu Government. The state scheme was launched in September 2026, with a target of covering one lakh households by March 2027.

How Much Subsidy Can You Get?

The combined subsidy depends on the capacity of the rooftop solar system installed.

- 1 kW system: ₹30,000 Central subsidy + ₹5,000 State subsidy = ₹35,000.

- 2 kW system: ₹60,000 Central subsidy + ₹10,000 State subsidy = ₹70,000.

- 3 kW system: ₹78,000 Central subsidy + ₹22,000 State subsidy = ₹1,00,000.

- Above 3 kW: The maximum combined subsidy remains ₹1,00,000.

The subsidy is transferred directly to the beneficiary`s bank account after the required installation, inspection and verification procedures.

Who Is Eligible for the ₹1 Lakh Solar Subsidy?

The scheme is intended for eligible residential electricity consumers who want to install rooftop solar panels. The main conditions include:

- The applicant must be a residential electricity consumer.

- The household must have an eligible domestic electricity connection.

- The applicant must register through the PM Surya Ghar national portal.

- The rooftop solar system must meet the applicable technical requirements.

- Solar panels must comply with the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) and applicable ALMM listing rules.

- Installation must be carried out through a TEDA-empanelled vendor to qualify for the Tamil Nadu state subsidy.

The total subsidy depends on the installed solar capacity and compliance with the scheme guidelines. It is not an automatic ₹1 lakh payment for every household.
