Suburban railway travel in India is set to become safer and more modern as the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has developed a new generation Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train featuring automatic doors and metro-style passenger facilities.

The newly designed suburban train coaches are expected to significantly improve passenger safety and travel convenience, especially during peak-hour operations.

Automatic Doors to Prevent Accidents

At present, many suburban EMU trains across India operate with open doors, leading to overcrowding near entrances and increasing the risk of passengers falling from moving trains.

To address these safety concerns, the newly developed EMU trains are equipped with:

- Automatic door closing systems
- Metro-style safety mechanisms
- Advanced passenger information systems
- Digital route display screens

Officials said the train will move only after all doors are fully closed, reducing the chances of accidents and unsafe travel.

Digital Passenger Information System Added

The new suburban trains also feature electronic display systems similar to metro rail networks. These digital screens will provide:

- Current station information
- Upcoming station details
- Travel announcements for passengers

This feature is expected to help commuters identify stations easily and avoid missing their stops during crowded travel conditions.

12-Coach Train with High Passenger Capacity

The newly introduced non-AC EMU train consists of 12 coaches and is designed to handle large passenger volumes efficiently.

Passenger Capacity
- Seating capacity: 1,003 passengers
- Total capacity including standing passengers: 4,695 passengers

The train coaches have been manufactured using stainless steel and aluminium materials to improve durability and reduce overall weight.

Improved Ventilation and Modern Design

Unlike traditional suburban trains, the new EMU rake includes:

- Better ventilation systems
- Passenger-friendly interiors
- Large windows for airflow
- Modern suburban rail features

The coaches are designed to provide a safer and more comfortable commuting experience for daily railway passengers.

Manufactured for Northern Railway

According to ICF officials, the newly built EMU train has been manufactured for the Northern Railway zone and was recently handed over.

The introduction of automatic-door EMU trains is considered a major step in modernising India’s suburban railway network and bringing metro-style safety stanandards to regular commuter rail services.
