Ration Shop Onion Sale Today: 1 Kg at Rs 35, Who Can Get It?

The price of onions has currently crossed Rs 70 per kg. To control the rising prices, the Tamil Nadu government is set to launch a scheme to sell onions at a lower price through ration shops.

Onion Prices Hit a High

Vegetables are an essential part of everyday cooking, with onions and tomatoes being among the most commonly purchased items. However, onion prices have reached a high in recent weeks due to a decline in supply.

At the Chennai Koyambedu vegetable market, big onions are currently being sold at around Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg. In retail shops, the price has crossed Rs 80 per kg.

As a result, demands have increased for measures to control onion prices. The Central Government has been sending onions in large quantities from warehouses in Nashik, Maharashtra, to several states. As part of these measures, steps have been taken to make onions available at a reduced price of Rs 35 per kg.

Onions to Be Sold at Rs 35 Per Kg

As part of this initiative, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that onions will be sold at a lower price through ration shops across the state.

In the first phase, onions will be supplied to 80 lakh family cardholders through 8,233 fair price shops located in urban areas.

Each family cardholder will be provided with one kg of onions at Rs 35 per kg. The onions will be sold through urban cooperative outlets, primary cooperative stores, Amudham shops and urban fair price shops.

Onion Sale Begins at Ration Shops Today

The Food and Civil Supplies Minister P. Venkata Raman and Cooperation Minister V. Gandhirajan are scheduled to launch the scheme today, Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 9:00 AM.

The launch will take place at the fair price shop of the Thiruvallikeni Urban Cooperative Society (TUCS Ltd.) in Alwarpet, Chennai.

Under the scheme, eligible family cardholders will be able to purchase onions at the subsidised price of Rs 35 per kg.
