Vadapalani Murugan Temple, also known as Vadapalani Andavar Temple, is a popular Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan in Vadapalani, Chennai. The temple is one of the prominent Murugan temples in the city and attracts devotees throughout the year. History of Vadapalani Murugan Temple

The history of Vadapalani Murugan Temple is associated with Annaswamy Naicker, who initially worshipped Lord Murugan in a small thatched hut. Around the late 19th century, the shrine developed into a proper temple, with Annaswamy Naicker playing an important role in its establishment and worship.

Annaswamy Naicker became well known among devotees for his spiritual practices and what was traditionally regarded as his ability to provide guidance through divine utterances, known as "arul vaakku." People are said to have approached him seeking guidance on various personal matters, including marriage, education, employment, and other challenges in life. Over time, the shrine gained popularity and developed into the prominent temple seen today.

Architecture and Special Features

Vadapalani Murugan Temple follows the traditional South Indian temple architectural style. The impressive Rajagopuram at the entrance is decorated with numerous colourful stucco figures depicting scenes associated with Hindu mythology and the stories of Lord Murugan.

The temple`s eastern tower is notable for its depiction of 108 Bharatanatyam dance postures. A temple tank is also situated in front of the temple, adding to the traditional character of the temple complex.

The main deity, Lord Murugan, is depicted in a standing posture and is traditionally associated with the form worshipped at Palani.
