Chennai to Get Fully Air-Conditioned Bus Shelter at Anna Square

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed to build a fully air-conditioned bus shelter at Anna Square near the existing bus terminus on Kamarajar Salai along Marina Beach. The project, estimated to cost ₹78.4 lakh, has been put out for tender.

The modern shelter will feature CCTV surveillance, free Wi-Fi, mobile charging points, LED lighting, and separate toilets for men and women. It will also include a bio-septic tank, underground water sump, and overhead water storage to ensure uninterrupted services.

According to GCC officials, air-conditioned shelters are more beneficial at busy bus termini, where passengers often wait longer compared to regular bus stops. The new facility will have two entrances—one facing the bus terminus and another towards Kamarajar Salai—for easy access.

Designed with accessibility in mind, the shelter will include wheelchair access, tactile paving for the visually impaired, non-slip flooring, accessible seating, and spacious walkways. Passenger information boards, route maps, QR codes, emergency helpline numbers, and public awareness messages will also be displayed to enhance commuter convenience.
