Tamil Nadu Weather Today: Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Forecast for 12 Districts, Chennai on Alert

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur, due to favourable weather conditions and an upper-air cyclonic circulation.

According to the latest weather bulletin, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is prevailing over South Interior Karnataka at an altitude of 5.8 km, while another circulation extends from 5.8 km to 7.6 km over South Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. A weak trough is also present over the north Tamil Nadu coastal region, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.

Heavy Rain Forecast

August 5, 2026: Heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) is likely at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Tiruchirappalli, and Karur, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.

August 6–7, 2026: Heavy rain is expected over the hill regions of Coimbatore, Theni, Tirunelveli, and Nilgiris, while several other districts may continue to experience thunderstorms with moderate rainfall.

Chennai Weather Forecast

For Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy. Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is likely in some parts of the city during the evening or night.

Maximum Temperature: 35–36°C
Minimum Temperature: 25–26°C

A similar weather pattern is expected to continue on Thursday (August 6).

Temperature Outlook

The weather department said no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal between August 5 and August 9, 2026.
