Chennai Metro: Koyambedu - Nandambakkam Service Expected in Six Months

Chennai Metro Rail services between Koyambedu and the Nandambakkam Trade Centre are expected to begin within six months, according to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). Construction work on this corridor is progressing rapidly as part of the city`s Phase II Metro Rail project.

Meanwhile, Metro services between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani have commenced, marking another milestone in Chennai`s public transport expansion.

Poonamallee - Vadapalani Metro Records Strong Passenger Footfall

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Metro service between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani. The corridor features 11 elevated Metro stations, and passenger services began at 4 PM on the first day.

A total of 25,474 passengers travelled on the route until 9 PM on the opening day. On the second day, Metro trains operated in both directions from 7 AM to 9 PM, carrying approximately 55,000 passengers.

According to Metro Rail officials, more than 80,000 passengers used the new service during its first two days of operation.

Koyambedu-Nandambakkam Metro Construction Progress

The next major development is underway on the 47-kilometre Madhavaram–Sholinganallur corridor, which will have 46 Metro stations. Since much of the route runs on elevated tracks, construction work has been progressing without major delays, officials said.

Elevated structures and track-laying work across sections covering Madhavaram, Retteri, Kolathur, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, Virugambakkam, Porur and Nandambakkam have reached the final stages.

70% of Construction Work Completed

Officials stated that approximately 70% of the construction work between Koyambedu and Nandambakkam Trade Centre has been completed.

Based on the current progress, Metro services on this section are expected to begin within the next six months. Once operational, the corridor is expected to improve connectivity between important residential, commercial and transport areas in Chennai.

The upcoming service forms part of the broader Phase II expansion, which aims to strengthen the city`s Metro network and provide commuters with additional public transport options.
