Ahead of Diwali 2026, food safety guidelines have been issued for businesses preparing and selling traditional sweets and savouries. The instructions aim to ensure food quality, hygiene and safe preparation during the festive season.
Food Business Licence and Registration
Sweet and savoury manufacturers and sellers in Chennai must have a valid food business licence or registration certificate. Those preparing and selling festive snacks from temporary locations must also complete the required registration.
Manufacturing and Expiry Dates Must Be Displayed
Sellers must clearly mention the manufacturing date and expiry date on sweet boxes and food packets. This will help customers check the freshness of the products before purchasing them.
Details of Oil and Ghee Used
Businesses must display information about the cooking oil and ghee used to prepare sweets and savouries. The details should be made available to customers through an information board at the premises.
Maintain Clean and Hygienic Conditions
Food items must be prepared, stored and sold in hygienic surroundings. Sellers should ensure that the premises are free from flies, insects and contamination.
