India recorded its highest-ever monthly retail sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in September 2026, with 333,634 units sold, marking a 74% increase compared with the same month last year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
In a report, FADA stated that electric vehicle sales reached a record level across the Indian market during September. The adoption rate of electric vehicles across various vehicle categories also increased to around 13%, compared with approximately 10% in September last year.
FADA President Sai Giridhar attributed the growth to festive-season demand, greater awareness of operating costs, a wider range of vehicle models and continued policy support through the PM E-DRIVE scheme and state government initiatives.
He noted that electric vehicles are increasingly becoming a mainstream choice rather than merely an alternative to conventional vehicles.
According to Giridhar, demand is playing a more significant role in driving EV adoption than subsidies alone. He added that electric mobility is becoming an important part of India`s growth trajectory.
The record sales indicate growing interest in electric mobility in India, supported by expanding model options, consumer awareness and government initiatives.
