Tamil Nadu’s First International University Campus Coming Soon to Chennai

Chennai is set to strengthen its position as a major education hub with the upcoming launch of Tamil Nadu’s first international university campus.

Among the agreements signed by Guidance Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu government’s nodal investment promotion agency, on Thursday, July 30, a significant deal focused on higher education and skill development.

The agreement with the University of Western Australia (UWA) paves the way for the establishment of its Chennai campus, which is expected to be inaugurated soon.

While several investments in Tamil Nadu focus on electronics, engineering and manufacturing, the UWA campus is expected to contribute to developing skilled graduates for emerging industries and the broader economy.

UWA Chennai Campus to Start MBA Programme in November

The University of Western Australia formally entered Tamil Nadu in 2025 and is preparing to begin academic operations in Chennai.

The university is expected to launch its MBA programme in November 2026, while other courses are planned to commence from March 2027.

Around Rs 125 crore is being invested in establishing the Chennai campus, which is expected to create more than 200 jobs.

The campus is being set up in the Velachery area of Chennai.

Courses Offered at UWA Chennai Campus

The University of Western Australia is ranked among the top 100 universities globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027.

UWA has planned two campuses in India - one in Chennai and another in Mumbai.

At its Chennai campus, UWA plans to offer five undergraduate programmes:

Economics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Computer Science, and Business Management.

At the postgraduate level, students will be able to pursue a Master of Information Technology and an MBA.

These programmes cover several areas that are seeing growing demand across technology, business, digital services and emerging industries.

UWA Working With UGC for Necessary Approvals

The university had earlier stated that it was working closely with the University Grants Commission (UGC) to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals for its Indian campuses and academic programmes.

Classes will commence after the required clearances are received from the regulatory authority.

The establishment of an international university campus in Chennai could provide students with access to globally recognised academic programmes while studying in India.

Scholarships Available for Students

UWA India plans to offer several scholarships and bursaries for eligible students across its programmes.

According to the e university, these financial support programmes are designed to recognise academic achievement, encourage talented students and provide financial assistance.

For many scholarships, students do not need to submit a separate application. Eligible applicants will automatically be considered when they apply for admission to UWA India.

These include the Early Bird Enrolment Bursary, UWA India Fee Waiver, Tamil Nadu UWA Bursary for the Chennai campus, and Maharashtra UWA Bursary for the Mumbai campus.

However, students must apply separately after submitting their admission application for scholarships such as the Premier Academic Award for Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, Academic Merit Award, and Vice-Chancellor High-Merit Award.

UWA Chennai Campus: Fees, Seats and Location

While the Tamil Nadu government`s latest statement did not provide detailed information about the size and student capacity of the upcoming UWA Chennai campus, earlier reports indicated that the facility would cover approximately 50,000 sq ft at DLF Cybercity.

The Chennai campus is expected to begin with an initial intake of around 300 students.

Annual tuition fees are expected to be approximately AUD 25,000, equivalent to around Rs 16.69 lakh, according to earlier reports.
