Chennai Metro Ridership Crosses 90 Lakh in May 2026

Chennai Metro Rail Limited recorded a strong rise in passenger traffic during May 2026, with total ridership crossing 90.14 lakh passengers.

According to CMRL data, the highest single-day ridership was recorded on May 18, when more than 3.54 lakh passengers travelled on the Chennai Metro network. In comparison, May 2025 recorded 89.09 lakh passengers, with the highest daily ridership at 3.23 lakh passengers.

Among various ticketing modes, 42.51 lakh passengers used the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), while 19.76 lakh passengers travelled using paper QR tickets. Around 4.20 lakh commuters used the WhatsApp ticket booking service, and 2.51 lakh passengers booked tickets through PhonePe.

CMRL also witnessed increased passenger usage during special events. During IPL match days, 31,444 passengers used event QR tickets, while 18,468 passengers travelled using special event QR tickets for the recent Ilaiyaraaja music concert.
