Posted on: 20/Feb/2026 10:22:43 AM

In a major move to curb air pollution, the Greater Chennai Corporation has announced a ₹25,000 spot fine for construction and demolition (C&D) vehicles that violate pollution control norms in the city.

₹25,000 Spot Fine for Pollution Violations

As part of stricter enforcement measures, vehicles transporting construction materials or debris must follow mandatory safety and environmental guidelines. A ₹25,000 fine will be imposed on vehicles that:

- Fail to cover materials properly with tarpaulin

- Spill debris or dust on roads

- Operate in violation of pollution control rules

- Transport overloaded construction waste

Officials have warned that violators may also face vehicle seizure, and the vehicle will be released only after the fine is fully paid.

Step to Control Dust and Air Pollution

Uncovered C&D vehicles are a major contributor to road dust and particulate pollution in Chennai. The crackdown aims to:

- Improve air quality levels

- Reduce dust pollution on city roads

- Protect public health

- Ensure compliance with environmental standards

Advisory to Contractors and Transporters

Construction companies, contractors, and transport operators are advised to strictly follow pollution control norms to avoid penalties. Authorities have intensified inspections across the city to ensure compliance.

The new rule reflects the civic body’s commitment to maintaining cleaner roads and improving environmental standards in Chennai.
