As the prices of coconuts and copra are at the verge of falling in one or two weeks, farmers in Tamil Nadu are told to get their harvest sold soon. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) states they have already started receiving coconuts from Kerala and the loads will be received from Karnataka in July.
As per predictions by TNAU, coconut prices are likely to face a downfall by Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 each tonne, and copra will face a decine of Rs 2 to Rs 4 per kg in another one month.
Currently, a tonne of coconut is priced Rs 23,000 or Rs 13 to Rs 14 per nut as per regulated prices by Avalpoondurai market. Whereas copra is priced Rs 78 to Rs 82 per kg.
Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre (AMI & BPC) of TNAU predicts that the price will fall to Rs 21000 per tonne of coconut and Rs 78 to Rs 80 for copra. This fall in price is due to the arrival of coconut and copra from Kerala, say officials from TNAU. Loads from Karnataka are expected next month which will further bring down the prices.
