Increasing heart attacks in India

Posted on: 10/Apr/2015 3:49:33 PM
India takes a negative pride of accounting to 60 per cent of world’s total heart diseases. Comparing our country with that of the rest of the world, in India, the incurrence of heart diseases is 10 years earlier, say electro-physicist cardiologist Dr A M Karthigesan from Apollo hospitals.

Quoting statistics from World Health Organization about heart disease, he says over 6300 Indians are diagnosed for heart disease every day out of which at least 40 per cent of them are under the age 40. Such an alarming increase in heart diseases in Indians is attributed to the change in lifestyle, extended work hours, smoking, stressful work and personal life, lack of exercise, etc. Heart attack also affects young people, he added.

Several researches and studies are being carried out to find a treatment method for heart problems. One of the recent promises from the healthcare industry to heart patients is the use of multipoint cardiac pacing resynchronisation therapy (CRT) pacemaker. This is helpful in improving the pumping capacity of heart that can in turn help prevent sudden cardiac death.

The doctor says in most cases of heart attack, the very first hour of the attack called the ‘golden hour’ is crucial. When there is a delay in treatment, it may lead to failure of heart.
