The proposed Chennai–Villupuram Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) has moved a step forward, with the final feasibility study recommending the Alandur–Villupuram alignment.

The ambitious project, estimated to cost ₹75,000 crore, aims to reduce travel time between Alandur and Villupuram from nearly four hours to just one hour. If implemented, it will significantly transform regional mobility and strengthen connectivity between Chennai and the southern districts.

The corridor will connect major transit and growth hubs including Airport, Tambaram, Kilambakkam, Chengalpattu, Maduranthakam and Tindivanam before reaching Villupuram. These areas are witnessing rapid residential and industrial expansion, making the rapid rail link strategically important.

Passenger projections indicate that the RRTS could handle around 2.18 lakh daily commuters by 2032. The project is also expected to ease congestion on existing suburban rail services and the GST Road highway corridor, while supporting the growth of satellite towns.

With its high investment and large-scale impact, the proposed RRTS is poised to become a game-changing infrastructure project for Tamil Nadu, pending further approvals and funding clearances.
