Low Pressure Over Southwest Bay of Bengal May Intensify in 24 Hours: IMD Update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean is expected to intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.

The system, which was observed on February 17, 2026, near the equatorial Indian Ocean, has moved west-northwestwards and remains over the same region as of 8:30 AM on February 18, 2026. Meteorologists predict further strengthening as it continues its movement in the west-northwest direction.

Dry weather likely across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

February 20

Light to moderate rainfall expected at isolated places over:

- South Tamil Nadu

- Coastal Tamil Nadu

- Puducherry and Karaikal

- Other interior districts likely to experience dry conditions.

Mist Warning for North Tamil Nadu

On February 19 and 20, light mist is likely during early morning hours in isolated areas of north Tamil Nadu districts.

Temperature Outlook

From February 18 to 22, no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions.
