Chennai Corporation to Build and Renovate Bus Shelters in Three Zones
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has sanctioned the construction of new bus shelters and the refurbishment of existing ones in Tondiarpet (Zone IV), Kodambakkam (Zone X), and Adyar (Zone XIII). In Tondiarpet, a new shelter will be built on a 16,000 sq.ft. vacant Corporation-owned site near R.K. Nagar, with 11,677 sq.ft. covered using tensile roofing. The roofing work, estimated at ₹76.5 lakh, will be handled by a private agency through a tender process. The total project cost is ₹1.79 crore, with administrative sanction granted on June 28, 2025.
In Kodambakkam, the worn-out bus terminus on Jones Road, near Jawaharlal Street in West Saidapet, will be refurbished with tensile roofing at a cost of ₹10.5 lakh. Orders for this work were issued on July 7, 2025. Meanwhile, in Adyar, two damaged bus shelters near Easwaran Koil and Gokhale Road will be reconstructed with tensile-roofed structures. Administrative approval for this project was granted on July 23, 2025.
These initiatives aim to enhance public transportation infrastructure and provide better shelter and convenience to daily commuters across Chennai.
