A recent study has raised concerns over increasing dust and noise pollution caused by ongoing works of Chennai Metro Rail Limited across several parts of the city.

The findings indicate that construction activities along major metro corridors are contributing to localized pollution spikes, affecting both residential neighbourhoods and busy commercial zones.

Areas such as Vadapalani, Purasawalkam, Perambur, Thoraipakkam, and Kodambakkam have been identified as key locations experiencing the impact of construction-related pollution.

According to the study, nearly half of the residents living near metro construction sites reported discomfort, mainly due to dust generated from excavation and the movement of construction materials. The issue becomes more prominent during dry weather conditions.

While air quality parameters such as particulate matter levels remain largely within permissible limits, the study noted that noise pollution is a growing concern, with levels frequently approaching or exceeding safe thresholds, especially during peak traffic hours.

Experts observed that the combination of ongoing construction and heavy vehicular traffic is intensifying pollution levels in these areas. In certain high-traffic zones, carbon monoxide levels were found to slightly exceed safe limits, adding to environmental concerns.

Despite the short-term impact, the metro rail project is expected to significantly improve urban mobility and reduce long-term congestion in Chennai. However, the study stresses the need for effective dust control measures, noise reduction strategies, and stricter monitoring to minimise inconvenience to the public.

Authorities are likely to review mitigation measures to ensure that infrastructure development progresses alongside environmental safety and public well-being.
