Phase-2 project of Chennai Metro rail - Whats happening now?

The joint venture of Hindustan Construction Company and KEC International limited has been making sensational news now!!

Just like how these 2 firms joined hands a few months back for the construction of an 8km stretch from Poonamallee to Porur, they have once again come together now. It is said that these 2 firms have become the lowest bidder for the construction of one of the important stretches in the phase-2 project of metro rail in Chennai. The 11.5km stretch between Puzhuthivakkam and Sholinganallur would be constructed by HCC and KEC together as a part of the line from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur line 5 in the phase-2 project. It is now said that there would be metro stations in places like Puzhuthivakkam, Kilkattalai, Echangadu, Kovilambakkam, Vellakal, Medavakkam Koot Road, Kamraj Garden Street, Medavakkam junction, Perumbakkam etc.

It must be noted that the other 2 lines in the Rs 61843 crores project include Madhavaram to Sipcot Line3 and Light House to Poonamallee or Line 4. Last year, CMRL divided the construction work into different packages and awarded the contracts early this year. The main purpose of dividing was to make sure that no single firm would get one full line for construction.

It was later mentioned by an officer that CMRL did not want any single contractor to have monopoly and hence opted for several contracts. It is known that L & T had got a contract to construct Porur to Power House stretch of the metro line in the Light house to Poonamalle line.
