School libraries in TN to be digitised, many students to get benefit

Posted on: 12/Dec/2019 9:40:01 AM
Some years back, when there communication technology wasn’t developed, the school students went to the libraries for gaining knowledge. Times have changed now.

With the availability of electronic gadgets, the students these days don’t go to the libraries to acquire knowledge. For the sake of making reading appealing to the younger generation, the school education department has planned this.

It is now brought out that the school libraries present across TN would be digitised and this would be done from next year onwards. A senior official belonging to the school education department expressed his thoughts and spoke about how by digitising the school libraries in TN the students would be made to devote some time for reading in the school. By this, the students would be able to learn in-depth about various concepts.

It must be taken into account that the school education department would digitise libraries of around 100 government schools belonging to 5 districts like Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Kancheepuram.

Libraries in Chennai schools would be digitised first and later on other school libraries would be digitised. Revamping of existing infrastructure plus developing new libraries would be carried out with an estimated amount o Rs 50 crores. Information collected is these libraries would have NOOK or Kinde tablets, desktops, audio books and educational software and by this the school students would be able to download and read over 1000 e-books. The official mentioned about how the libraries would become paperless and would attract more students.

E-books could be borrowed by the students having android mobiles or laptops with internet connection and it would be possible to gain online access to the library’s database by their devices even from their homes. Point is libraries would have website with a link to these books.

There were some complaints from the teachers belonging to the government schools in Puzhal, Kelambakkam and Nazarathpet etc about the digitising of school libraries. These teachers have revealed that their schools don’t even have a library and they want a room where the students could sit and read.

The teachers have also brought out that their schools do not have a separate period dedicated to reading. It must be noted that the few books that were available where either torn or obsolete and the students find them boring. The Nazarthpet teacher concluded that due to this the library period was substituted with subject period and turned library to classroom.
