Committees to be formed by GCC to monitor water bodies

Posted on: 12/Dec/2019 9:43:15 AM
This year has been sensational for the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation!!

It has restored more than 130 water bodies within Chennai city limits. The point is GCC would form committees at the zonal level to monitor the restored water bodies periodically. It is now said that by the monitoring work issues like encroachments and sewage inflow could be prevented.

Under the zonal officer, there would be others like assistant engineer, a sanitary inspector and other staff and they would form the monitoring committee. It is well known that there are 15 zones in the Chennai city corporation. An official of GCC spoke about how the committee members would have to ensure that the restored water bodies are maintained well. The staffs at the zonal level would be keen in not allowing their efforts go waste.

As many as 210 water bodies inside Chennai city limits were identified for restoration and out of these de-silting has been completed in more than 130 water bodies.

The senior official threw light on the restoration works like strengthening of bunds, laying footpath around the water body and installation of street lights that are being done. By the end of the month of January 2020, work would begin in the remaining water bodies.

The sensational piece of information is many water bodies like Uthu Kulam, Samiyar Kulam of zone 3 (Madhavaram), Appadurai pond and Alangulam pond of zone11 (Valasarawakkam), Rettai Kulam, Madipakkam Lake of zone 14(Perungudi) and Karumanchavadikulam of zone 15 ( Sholinganallur) have a different look now when compared to the beginning of 2019.

Before the next year’s monsoon, the civic body would be ecologically restoring all the water bodies present within the city limits. This was as per the corporation chief engineer, Mr. Nandakumar. It was brought to light by some engineers with the Chennai city corporation that encroachments was one of the challenge faced by them in the restoration of lakes and ponds. It must be taken into account that in several places the official had tough time and while taking up the restoration work at Ramapuram pond the official were threatened.
